IF: Milton Keynes International Festival 2012 announces its full programme

IF 2012 Official Programme PDF

  • UK premieres from Cambodia’s Phare Ponleu Selpak, Catalan company Enfila’t and Canada’s L’Orchestre D’Hommes-Orchestres
  • New Festival commissions from Metro-Boulot-Dodo and Fevered Sleep
  • Spectacular outdoor shows from Wired Aerial Theatre and La Compagnie Carabosse
  • Quirky and intimate events including The Cabaret of Ideas and Mira Calix’s live score for a classic silent movie
  • Olympics-inspired events including a restaging of Au Cul du Loup’s Score
  • Comedy including Phill Jupitus, Hardeep Singh Kohli and Jon Richardson
  • Live music including Duke Special, The Unthanks and Tom Baxter

IF: Milton Keynes International Festival takes over the urban landscapes and public spaces of Milton Keynes from 20 to 29 July. For these ten days, this distinctive recent addition to the UK festival scene transforms Milton Keynes into a place of arts and adventure.

{gallery}arts-entertainment/if-2012/{/gallery}

Three extraordinary international shows receive their UK premieres at IF: 2012:

Rouge is the result of a three-year collaboration between pioneering Cambodian arts organisation Phare Ponleu Selpak and France’s Compagnie UBI, presented in association with the Southbank Centre and part of the London 2012 Festival. Very physical choreography and the six young acrobats’ exceptional circus skills combine to create a powerful show about memory in a country where younger generations have grown up believing that the Khmer Rouge’s reign of terror is just a myth (Theatre Tent, Campbell Park 20 – 23 July).

Award-winning Catalan company Enfila’t presents Plecs where four characters combine circus, dance and acrobatics on a stage cluttered with Heath Robinson-esque contraptions, keeping their musical score playing no matter what happens (Theatre Tent, Campbell Park, 21, 22 and 24 July). Enfila’t is one of the five companies featured in IF: 2012’s focus on performance from Catalonia and the Balearic Islands, presented in association with Institut Ramon Llull.

Quebec’s L’Orchestre d’Hommes-Orchestres Performs Tom Waits is more highly-theatrical musical experiment than concert. A bustling six-strong orchestra transforms the repertoire of the iconic Tom Waits into an audacious spectacle using instruments invented from nearly 100 objects including tea pots, saws, boots and boxing gloves (The Stables Spiegeltent, Campbell Park 26 & 27 July).

IF: 2012 has commissioned work from two of the UK’s most engaging companies:

Metro-Boulot-Dodo’s site-specific Track Down – MK is a unique multi-media game that takes people on a digital journey that will immerse them in a world that comes to life as clues are solved. Armed with a smartphone and with the aid of a downloadable app, the audience has to build a city before the money runs out . . . The more attention that is paid, the more this high stakes game will unfold - nothing is left on location by accident (Xscape Milton Keynes, 20 – 29 July).

Fevered Sleep’s Little Universe is the first commission from the new Small Wonders consortium of major festivals working together to develop new live outdoor theatre for under 5s. Little Universe explores big ideas for very small people, from the biggest of galaxies to the smallest things in the world, revealing the patterns and movements that set everything in motion. The children will join forces with a company of professional adult performers in a show which is at once carefully choreographed and wildly anarchic (Campbell Park, 21 & 22 July).

IF: 2012 brings together some of the best outdoor spectacles and inspiring projects:

La Compagnie Carabosse’s beautiful Fire Garden (Campbell Park, 20 – 22 July) comes hotfoot from prehistoric Stonehenge to that most modern of settlements, Milton Keynes. Wired Aerial Theatre’s epic eco-warning As The World Tipped takes place high above the audience in the night sky (Campbell Park, 25 & 26 July) and The Lone Twin Boat Project (thecentre:mk Shopping Centre, 20 – 29 July) which sees Lone Twin’s incredible 30-foot sailing boat, made from donated wood with stories attached, stop off on its maiden voyage at one of the furthest points from the sea in the UK!

The Boat Project has inspired the Festival’s producers The Stables to commission a CD, Harbour of Songs, produced by IF: 2012’s Artist-in-Residence Adrian McNally. It features some of the UK’s finest songwriters including The Unthanks who, with special guests, will play music from the album in The Stables Spiegeltent in Campbell Park on 23 July, the album’s official launch day.

Festival goers can also experience some fabulously quirky events:

The Cabaret of Ideas is a live Wikipedia where audience members ‘lucky-dip’ four 20-minute conversations from some of Milton Keynes’ finest thinkers which might include a Formula 1 car designer, a Paralympian sportswoman, a pop musician, a climate change dissident and a Japanese Buddhist monk (The Stables Spiegeltent, 21 July). Award-winning composer and Radiohead collaborator Mira Calix has created a live musical accompaniment to a classic 1926 silent film, The Adventures of Prince Achmed, directed by Lotte Reiniger and presented in association with Independent Cinema MK (Theatre Tent, Campbell Park, 25 July). Silent Arena’s Silent Disco features two DJs playing their music choices simultaneously on two separate channels enabling Festival partygoers to tune in through wireless headphones (The Stables Spiegeltent, Campbell Park 27 July).

Olympic and Paralympic themes thread through IF: 2012:

French company Au Cul du Loup presents their hilarious hit show Score, specially restaged for IF and  inspired by the sporting world, featuring sticky-taped wrestlers, intergalactic hockey matches, paper-clad sumo wrestlers and other ingenious sporting spoofs (Theatre Tent, Campbell Park 26 – 29 July). Sports-inspired classical music concerts include Bowlympics by virtuoso string quartet Bowjangles who fence, row, box and more whilst playing, singing and dancing (The Stables Spiegeltent, 28 July). Ensemble 360 precedes its concert of Olympics-inspired music with a specially-choreographed workout Warm Up For The Olympics to live music by US composer Stephen Montague (The Stables Spiegeltent, 22 July).

Comedy, cabaret and live music feature in the packed Stables Spiegeltent programme:

Comedy includes Phill Jupitus previewing his new Edinburgh show You're Probably Wondering Why I've Asked You Here...(22 July); Jon Richardson, from Channel 4’s Stand Up for the Week and Eight Out of Ten Cats (25 July); and Celebrity Masterchef finalist Hardeep Singh Kohli on a mission to find the best Indian takeaway in the UK (29 July).

Live music includes Festival Artist-in-Residence Adrian McNally in concert with The Unthanks (23 July); the bracingly eccentric and bruised romanticism of Duke Special (20 July); jazz-comedy juggernaut The Horne Section (20 & 21 July); acclaimed singer-songwriter Tom Baxter with newly-acquired flamenco influences (24 July); British R&B man James Hunter and his Philly/Motown-tinged soul; and The Raghu Dixit Project blending Indian and world music styles (29 July).

Cabaret includes the heady comic cocktail of The Fitzrovia Radio Hour, a blend of homage and satire on IF’s Vintage Day (28 July), the divine Lili la Scala and guests in the rollicking late night The Gilded Lili Variety Revue (28 July) and the genre-busting big band clog and rap extravaganza The Demon Barber Roadshow (21 July).

Children and families will have much to enjoy with free events in Campbell Park:

Kazzum’s interactive show for all the family sees all sorts of Brown Paper Packages come to land in Campbell Park with three enormous boxes emitting the most peculiar sounds – plus paper-folding workshops after each show (21 & 22 July); in Res de Res’ Bridges (Pontes) a character performs acrobatics with unnerving skill on a set that looks for all the world like a curious pop-up junk shop (28 July); and Barcelona-based company Guixot de 8 have used reclaimed materials and ingenious mechanics to turn some of the 20th century’s most famous sculptures into giant games and puzzles (28 & 29 July).

Many of the Festival’s free events are also presented as part of The World Picnic, a large multicultural community celebration on the final day of IF: 2012 (Campbell Park, 29 July).

The Festival also features a series of artist talks and discussions.

Full programme listings follow.

IF: 2012 is part of Milton Keynes Summer of Culture which features Milton Keynes Festival Fringe, a collection of special arts and heritage events to celebrate the Jubilee and the Olympics.

IF: Milton Keynes International Festival is produced by The Stables and supported by Arts Council England and Milton Keynes Council.

Taxi Tips from Skyline Taxis...

Always give yourself enough time
Skyline Taxis advise that you give yourself at least 20 minutes for journeys to the train station, work, coach station etc. as there are factors that are out of anyone’s control that can delay and disrupt journey times, such as traffic or road works. It always better to be 10 minutes early than 10 minutes late.

Always Pre-Book
Never get into a Private Hire Minicab without booking, this is illegal for minicab drivers.  Always call to pre-book and make sure you get into your cab.  Skyline Taxis send a text message with your vehicles details before it arrives. If you do use an un-booked minicab beware, the Company will have no record of the journey and you will not be insured should anything happen!  It is fine to get into a 'Hackney' cab without booking as these are fully licensed to pick up un-booked fares.

Overcharged?
If you think that the driver is asking for too much money for your fare, call the Taxi Company whilst you are still in the car. They will have the booking logged on the system and can give you a good estimate of what the journey should cost, advisable to resolve your query there and then.

Always Book
Never get into a Private Hire taxi without booking, this is called 'blagging' and is illegal for taxi drivers on a Private Hire License. If you do use an unbooked taxi, there will be no record of the journey so the driver has to make up a (usually extortionate) price on the spot, if you leave any property in the taxi you have no hope of getting it back, you are also not insured should anything happen. It's fine to get into a 'Hackney' cab without booking as these are fully licensed to pick up unbooked fares, Private Hire Taxis are usually Saloon or estate cars and Hackney cabs are usually Black Cab London style, larger cars.

Booking A Minibus
When traveling with more than 4 people it is always advisable to book at least one day in advance to ensure your vehicle will be available. Most companies will send out 2 cars if there are no buses available, 2 cars will cost slightly more so do double check with the Company.

Booking an Airport Transfer
Advisable to book in advance, giving the cab company’s time to ensure they have a driver available and it also gives them the opportunity to check flight information to avoid any delays.
